Ballina Shire Council is developing a master rehabilitation plan to guide the restoration of Alstonville Creek within Tanamera Reserve with funding through the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program.

The project aims to re-naturalise 650 metres of stormwater drainage channel within Tanamera Reserve creating a more natural, meandering waterway. It will restore streambank habitat and create a habitat corridor for local native species and create shaded green space for the local community.

The project will focus on the following key elements to restore the waterway:

  • Improve hydrological function of the reserve including stormwater drainage.
  • Restore riparian habitat for local native species and improved habitat connections.
  • Re-naturalise the drainage channel into a natural creek.
  • Improve water quality for positive downstream flow on effects.
  • Create a shaded green space and nature interactions for the local community.

Council has engaged local consultant, Australian Wetlands Consulting (AWC), to undertake community consultation to inform the final restoration design of the waterway. Council and AWC are inviting the community to provide feedback.

Site visit and walk

AWC will be hosting a site visit inclusive of a site walkover on Friday 2 May 2025. This will commence at 1pm and is scheduled for approximately two hours. The meeting point is the picnic shelter located off Clare Street, Alstonville in the centre of Tanamera Reserve.
