The Alstonville Cultural Centre, has been a vital facility for sport, recreation, and library services since its construction in the early 1980s. However, the Centre has not undergone any major renovations or modernisation—until now.

In 2021, Ballina Shire Council endorsed a concept design to refurbish the Centre, including a new two-storey library annex. By 2022, an architectural consultant was engaged to deliver detailed designs, engineering specifications, and cost estimates for this significant project.

The redevelopment will transform the Alstonville Cultural Centre into an accessible, modern, and fully compliant facility, meeting the needs of the growing Alstonville and Wollongbar communities.

What’s Included in the Refurbishment?

  • Two-storey library annex with lift access.
  • Upgraded, accessible amenities.
  • Expanded sports hall court to comply with modern run-off standards.
  • New roof sheeting and a solar PV system to reduce energy costs.
  • New office, reception, and kitchenette.
  • New entrance foyer and servery.
  • Off-street access for better community connectivity.
  • Landscaping to enhance the surrounding environment.
  • Air conditioning in the renovated multi-purpose hall and foyer.

Library Transformation

The Alstonville Library is set to become a modern, accessible hub for learning and community engagement. The expanded two-storey library will feature:

  • Increased space growing from 145m² to 756m² to better serve the Alstonville and Wollongbar population.
  • Dedicated areas including a vibrant children’s zone, computer and study areas, and meeting rooms for community use.
  • Modern amenities with accessible bathrooms, air conditioning, and a staff room for enhanced user and staff comfort.
  • Technology upgrades with spaces designed to support digital learning and connectivity.
  • Flexible design with adaptable layouts to accommodate diverse programs and events.

The library’s design aligns with the NSW Public Library Building Guidelines, ensuring it meets the needs of our growing community while maintaining high-quality standards.

Temporary Library Relocation
To maintain services during construction, the Alstonville Library will temporarily relocate to another site in Alstonville (date and location yet to be confirmed). The new location will include flexible layouts, dedicated children’s areas, and offsite book storage.

Funding Bodies
The estimated $16 million project relies on multiple funding sources, including:

  • Section 7.11 Developer Contributions.
  • Federal Government grants, including the Growing Regions Program (pending approval).
  • Ballina Shire Council reserves and potential loan funding.
