Ballina Shire Council is seeking community feedback on plans to reconstruct and revitalise Cherry Street between River Street and Tamar Street.
As Ballina continues to grow, Cherry Street plays an increasingly important role as a key connection through the Town Centre, supporting local businesses, residents and visitors. Council is planning a major upgrade that will not only renew ageing road infrastructure but also create a safer, more attractive and more welcoming streetscape for everyone who uses the area.
We invite residents, business owners, workers and visitors to review the concept design and share their feedback before the project progresses to detailed design.
What's Proposed?
The concept design includes:
Reconstruction of Cherry Street between River Street and Tamar Street
A new central raised concrete and paved median
Upgraded pedestrian crossing facilities, including a new pedestrian refuge near the Tamar Street roundabout
Wider paved footpaths to improve pedestrian access and comfort
New kerb and gutter throughout the project area
Additional street trees and landscaping to enhance the streetscape
Retention of existing parking numbers through a revised parking layout
Inclusion of street furniture including bins and public seating
Why Is This Project Important?
The proposed upgrade aims to deliver long-term benefits for the community by:
Improving the condition and functionality of a key Town Centre street
Creating safer and more accessible pedestrian connections
Enhancing the look and feel of the Town Centre
Supporting local businesses and encouraging people to spend more time in the area
Providing infrastructure that supports Ballina's growing population
Creating a more attractive destination for residents and visitors
Project Timeline
Community consultation is now open until Tuesday 28 July 2026.
Following consultation, Council will review feedback and refine the design before progressing to detailed design and construction planning.
Construction is currently anticipated to commence in early 2027.
Funding
The project is estimated to cost $1.1 million over the next two financial years and is funded through Council's Delivery Program and Operational Plan (DPOP).
