At its June 2026 Ordinary Meeting, Council resolved to adopt the following new fee for 2026/27:
Residential Asbestos Disposal Fee – $618 per tonne
In collaboration with Local Government NSW (LGNSW), Council is preparing to undertake a pilot Residential Asbestos Disposal Program at the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre. The trial will provide a safe, controlled and lawful disposal option for small volumes of correctly packaged non-friable asbestos generated within the Ballina Shire.
The program aims to improve access to a compliant disposal service, reduce the risk of illegal dumping and support the safe removal of legacy asbestos from the built environment.
The service will operate on a pre-booked basis only and will be available for quantities less than 10m² or 100kg per customer. The proposed gate fee is $618 per tonne.
An initial three-month trial is planned to commence in late 2026, subject to the adoption of the proposed fee.
