Consultation has concluded

Council has secured State Government co-funding to prepare a detailed design and obtain planning approvals for a new Shared Path between Park Lane and Cooper Close, Lennox Head.

These works are identified in Council’s Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (2018) and Bike Plan (2017) and will improve connectivity between the town centre and outlying residential areas such as Sanctuary Village and Fig Tree Hill Drive, while also improving cyclist and pedestrian safety, and local amenity.

Council has also received State Government funding to construct a pedestrian refuge at the intersection of Fig Tree Hill Drive and Ross Lane, which will provide an essential connection point for the proposed Shared Path. This pedestrian refuge will be constructed during the 2023/24 financial year.

Both the design of the Shared Path and construction of the pedestrian refuge are funded through Transport for NSW's Get NSW Active Program.

Completion of this design and approval stage will enable funding to be sought for construction.

Help us pick the right path!

Four shared path options have been identified.

While each proposed path alignment has its own characteristics, all options begin at Park Lane, Lennox Head and extend to the Fig Tree Hill Drive/Ross Lane intersection.

We are seeking feedback from residents to inform the final design. Tell us which option you prefer and why by taking the quick survey below.

Submissions close Friday 1 September 2023.

Option A - 2.41km long

Extends along Byron Street from the corner of Park Lane, passing Lennox Head Public School.

A pedestrian refuge located to the west of the Shell Service Station then directs users to the northern side of the street where the path continues to Byron Bay Road.

A further pedestrian refuge located on Byron Bay Road north of the Byron Street intersection directs users to the west side of Byron Bay Road where the path then connects onto Coopers Close and then finishes at Fig Tree Hill Drive.

The pedestrian refuge located on Byron Bay Road represents the most challenging element of this alignment as it would require speed reduction along this section of road to ensure safety and compliance.

Option B - 2.44km long

Follows the same alignment as Option A along Byron Street but diverts at the existing path on the corner of Byron Street/Fern Street onto Daintree Drive.

The path then continues along Daintree Drive and connects to Byron Bay Road through Council drainage reserve and continues along Byron Bay Road to connect to Coopers Close and Ross Lane.

A pedestrian refuge would be required along Byron Bay Road south of the Byron Street intersection. Speed reduction along this section of road would be required to support this crossing point.

Option C - 2.68km long

Follows the same alignment as Option A along Byron Street but diverts to Daintree Drive past the Shell Service Station.

This option then follows a similar alignment as Option B through Council drainage reserve to Byron Bay Road.

As with option B, A pedestrian refuge would be required along Byron Bay Road south of the Byron Street intersection.

Option D - 2.47km long

Follows the same alignment as Option A along Byron Street but diverts to a pedestrian refuge just past the Shell Service Station.

The path then continues north past Megan Crescent Oval and residences located on Alison Avenue.

It then extends east-west along an existing fire trail to connect to Coopers Close via a pedestrian refuge on Byron Bay Road.

There are a number of significant challenges associated with this option including:

  • An extensive EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) approval process.
  • Land acquisition, as approximately 700m of this proposed path is located on private property.
  • Vegetation and stormwater management of the section of path located within the Resilience and Hazards SEPP(2021).
