Consultation has concluded.
As part of Ballina Shire Council’s commitment to building a more resilient community through improving flood preparedness and response, Council commissioned BMT to undertake the ‘Ballina Flood Study Update 2023’ (BFSU 2023). As part of Ballina Shire Council’s commitment to building a more resilient community through improving flood preparedness and response, Council commissioned BMT to undertake the ‘Ballina Flood Study Update 2023’ (BFSU 2023). The study provides up to date flood information for land use planning, infrastructure planning and design, and emergency management to reduce flood risk in affected communities.
The key objective of the BFSU 2023 is to provide updated flood mapping across Council’s Local Government Area (LGA) for a range of design flood magnitudes, expressed in terms of the Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP). It also aims to improve understanding of flood behaviour and impacts, and quantify flood risk within the Ballina Shire.
The BFSU 2023 study area is a shire wide update on regional flooding processes. When adopted, the update will supersede the 2008 Ballina Flood Study Update and the 2004 Wardell and Cabbage Tree Island Flood Study, encompassing the whole regional floodplain of Ballina Shire.
This study has been delivered with financial support from the Federal Government and undertaken in accordance with the principles of the NSW Government’s Flood Risk Management Manual.
You can review the BFSU 2023 documents and provide feedback via the survey below before 28 February 2025. The study is presented in two volumes; Volume 1 is the technical report and Volume 2 contains the flood maps generated as part of this study. The results from key flood events can be viewed on Council's Mapping Portal.
