Ballina Shire Council has prepared aDraft Place and Public Realm Frameworkto guide the development of future streetscapes and public open spaces in Ballina Shire.
What is the public realm?
The public realm is the collective communal part of cities and towns with shared access for all, such as streets, pathways, and parks. The Place and Public Realm Framework focuses on three different types of public realm that Council has the most control over:
roads and streets
open spaces
linear corridors or greenways.
The community’s vision
The Place and Public Realm Framework outlines a list of commitments Council will follow as it works towards achieving the community’s vision for:
Better connected pedestrian and cyclist routes through and between our towns and villages.
Greener streets that are cooler and more comfortable.
A strong sense of place for each locality supported by design and local storytelling.
Community vibrancy to activate and celebrate our places.
Have Your Say
Share your travels photos. Have you been in another town or city, or even somewhere locally, and seen a bike path, park or street design that you thought would be great in Ballina Shire? Now is the time to tell us! Upload your photo with a brief description of what you like about it and why it would be a great addition to our community. You can also vote on photos other people have shared.
Complete the feedback form. Let us know what you think of the draft framework, including the vision and the commitments outlined, by completing the simple online form below.
Next Steps
Community feedback will be reviewed by staff and reported to a future Council meeting.
Once this overarching framework is finalised, it will inform the preparation of a design manual, including specific typologies and colour palettes, for use by Council staff when developing streetscapes and open spaces for our community.
Other strategic council plans will also be progressively reviewed and updated in line with the adopted framework.
